The Surgeon's Clinic: My First Anatomy Lesson
My earliest memories are steeped in the world of healing. My grandfather, an accomplished orthopedic surgeon in India, ran his own clinic, and my childhood visits were never dull. I’d watch, mesmerized, as he performed plastering and casting on patients with fractured ligaments.
The walls of his clinic were my first classroom. Signs detailing the different bones and joints, complete with their intricate labels, drew my eye and fueled a deep intrigue. How did these treatments work? What was the mystery behind the healing of a fractured bone? This early exposure gave me my first profound insight—the human body is an amazing, complex machine, and I wanted to know how it was built.
A Moment of Urgency: The Mystery of Birth
I have a brother who is 8-years younger than me. I remember the couple of hours before my brother was born, and that situation was very intense. My mother felt a sudden kick in her stomach. She collapsed to the ground. This triggered a sense of urgency in my dad and I. We immediately rushed my mother to the hospital, and the obstetrician injected anesthesia into my mom, which made my mom become unconscious.
Month by month fetal development
My father asked me to wait outside until the baby was born. Although, suddenly, the baby was strangled in the umbilical cord, and the baby was unable to breathe. I was very tense, and I rapidly rushed to the hospital room. Sweat was dripping down my father’s face out of worry on what to do. There was no nurse or any person of medical aid in the room at the moment. My father shouted loudly, “Help! Help!” Without further delay, people ran into the room and untangled the baby from the cord with delicate handling. Luckily, the baby was born safe and alive, who is now my amazing younger brother. The experience with the birth of my brother arose questions within me. How are babies developed from one cell into a full body in the mother’s womb? What are the challenges of child birth? This desires me to discover gynecology and its wonders in depth.
The Shadow of the Pandemic
Not long after, a shadow fell over the planet: COVID-19.
The initial wave of the pandemic was a terrifying period of global uncertainty. Like so many, my family faced immense challenges. I watched as people struggled to find basic necessities, as my own parents scoured for export rice, leading to months of “scrunchy rice” at the dinner table.
School moved online, and the difficulty of asynchronous learning, technical glitches, and the temptation for my peers to simply cheat made grasping complex concepts like math an uphill battle. But the true impact was deeply personal and heartbreaking: I lost distant family members to the virus.
This tragic experience, coupled with the global struggle, instilled in me a fierce desire to help. Though I was only a young pre-teen, the event sparked critical questions that persist today: How do viruses and pandemics spread so rapidly? How do they develop? I needed to understand the mechanics of these invisible enemies to someday contribute to ending such tragic experiences.
Unraveling the Blueprint: A Scientist's Influence
My journey toward medicine was further inspired by my uncle, a scientist working in genetics and disease research for the U.S. government.
His work, including research articles approved by the NIH and a nomination award from his boss, truly captivated me. When I interviewed him, he spoke about gene-related topics like insertion, depletion, alteration, and mutagens—the very building blocks of life. This conversation sparked a genuine interest in the structure of DNA molecules and how they determine every person’s unique characteristics and physique.
The idea that the blueprint for life could be altered, studied, and healed was a powerful draw.
The Warning Sign: A Mother’s Heart
This event frightened and motivated me in equal measure. I now ask myself: What causes heart damage? How life-threatening are different cardiovascular conditions? And what are the delicate, essential components of the human heart?
The Path Forward
All of these experiences—from the anatomy charts in a clinic to the shock of a global crisis and the personal fear for a loved one—have converged into a deep, driving interest in medicine.
I am now dedicated to engaging with these complex aspects of life, researching, and gathering information to understand the deep sophistication that comes with the study of the human body. It is a commitment that is both intellectual and profoundly personal.
